“Somatics are collections of practices and disciplines that all have one thing in common – they are designed to develop kinesthetic awareness. For many people these two words don’t mean anything, but it describes the sense of physical feeling – feel the wind breeze on your face, the sun warmth on your back, the winter cold on your face. Somatics helps us to feel better and release”.
That’s how Dan Sykes, the host of the Emergency Fish Party show, describes the unique Somatic arts and techniques they are exploring and studying in their show. Together with different people they meet around the world and professional experts and instructors they will get punched, kicked and whipped to explore the body/mind connection to find the best way to relax by getting to know their own bodies in nontraditional ways as we know them usually.
Somatics is a versatile field that can be explored and used in dancing, psychotherapy, spiritual practices and also bodywork. And Dan Sykes’ show helps us to understand how we feel, how we fell about ourselves and how we can learn to be in a harmony with our mind and body through unique actions and trainings.
The show Dan Sykes hosts already have the Season 1 with 18 episodes, and each of them is unique, maybe shocking but also educating. For example, they go to Latvia to explore the science of panic, try the duckwalk, learn how to roll and take a slap. They visit New Mexico to give the Russian Stick Massage training. Dan Saykes with his team learns that being blindfolded for one hour once a month can give you several benefits. They learn about making chaga tea and teach new actors how somatics can improve acting performance.
The team travels from place to another meeting different people from many fields, learning from them and giving them their knowledge. It’s an interaction process that helps to better understand themselves, learn something new and understand how somatics can help us to be more relaxed and in harmony.
